IPL6 Amateur Regional

The IPL6 Amateur Regional qualifier kicked off right after the streaming of a very quick IPTL set. The amateur stipulations states that all players that are qualified to play must have less than $1,000 earned in live events. This means that the players on display can be easier to connect to -- they're closer to the majority than the top. But, no disrespect, pro play is still pro play.

Semi-final #1 St.Zero v. Pink

Ohana -- Game one

Zero marched in with fearless abandon with great zergling pressure.

Zero dominated this one early and often. Zergling pressure against the misplaced defensive cannons for Pink and this ZvP was an quick win. Pink's early expansion backfired and Zero crushed the first game.

Entombed Valley -- Game two

Zero cleaned up Pink's all-in cannon rush.

Pink went for cheese in game two with a cannon rush on Zero. The response from Zero was a perfectly timed drone pull and zergling defense to end the cannon threat. The wall to prevent Zero's push with zerglings was too late and Pink had no choice but to GG out.

Semi-final #2 ST.Panic v. Arthur

Ohana -- Game one

Both started in defensive positions for the PvP mirror. Arthur played safe and expanded, while Panic expended resources for a great timing push of immortals/colossus. Unfortunately for Arthur, his defensive play ended with no scouting of the impending army push from Panic and he loses the first game.

Entombed Valley -- Game two

Arthur's better tech and economic advantage was enough for the defense.

Arthur changed his game plan with probe scouting and an early phoenix harass. The denied expansion for Panic led to an all-in push with immortals/stalkers and warped in units, but Arthur's harass damage gave him the advantage and the high ground. The tie goes to Arthur and we move to game three.

Daybreak -- Game three

Panic's advantage of dark templars won the base race.

The mirror match ended with both players settling with different beginning builds. Arthur transitioned to blink stalkers, while Panic went with stalkers and dark templars. Arthur's late scout to see the dark templar and he lost all his ability to scout invisible units. Panic's great base race and distraction gave him the Nexus kill and the map reveal. The deck was stacked against Arthur as his units kept dying to dark templar chase-down, and his base race could not continue.

Grand final ST.Zero v. ST.Panic

Cloud Kingdom -- Game one

Zero's six-pool, all-in, strategy falls on its head.

Teammates in the grand finals, but enemies to get into IPL6 with a free ride on the line. Zero began the game with a six-pool. Panic scouted it out and created a forge in response, but his cannon timing was a bit late and was forced to pull his mining line. Unfortunately, for Zero, his over commitment to speedlings and constant pressure was a bit too much. Panic's response and counter push crushed the small defense of weak zerglings.

Daybreak -- Game two

Zero's beginning was not a six-pool, but rather a 15-hatch and a third expansion shortly after. The lack of aggression, however, led to a very tech-heavy, standard ZvP. While Panic tried to harass and scout with phoenixes, Zero committed to some defense and droned up. Finally, both parties simultaneously pushed out with timing attacks on expansions. Zero's great defense and resistance (not to mention great fungal use) bonded all of Panic's units and forced the last game.

Ohana -- Game three

Zero's new zerg metagame -- mass zerglings and push early and often.

No need to explain game three. Zero's all-in of drones and zerglings was amazingly good enough. Zero's all-in actually won with small reinforcements of zerglings to take the game early.

Del Toro's Pinocchio Gets Shelved

It's off to the chopping block for Guillermo del Toro's stop-motion Pinocchio movie, which had Daniel Radcliffe and Tom Waits in talks to join. Gris Grimly, who illustrated the original storybook on which the film would've been based, revealed via Twitter this week that the feature project is no longer happening.

Bleeding Cool was able to secure the tweets before they were removed earlier today. "Short to the point update on Pinocchio for those inquiring: It appears that this is not the right time for such a superior-adventurous flick," Grimly said. He then replied to a fan, adding, "There are people like us out there. But they look at numbers. Frankenweenie was a box office failure to them."

So, it sounds like that's it for Del Toro's Pinocchio, at least for now.

How Nvidia's Project Shield went from Prototype to Announcement

According to Nvidia, its streaming all-in-one game device Project Shield started its life less than a year ago as "little more than a game controller fastened to a smartphone with wood." The company has written a detailed blog, outlining how Project Shield made its way to a CES announcement this year. Apparently, the controller and screen combo was considered for quite some time.

"We’ve been talking on and off about building something for more than five years, maybe 10," said Nvidia senior vice president of content and strategy Tony Tamasi. "We wrote all the core software to hook Android games to controllers. Then we thought, ‘Why don’t we just build a device with a great controller built in?'"

A mere ten days before its CES reveal, Project Shield was still in the Nvidia labs, being assembled and tweaked by engineers wearing blue lab coats. Fueled by "greasy" fried chicken, the team spent 14-hour days for months on end building the device. The announcement of the Tegra 4 kept Nvidia motivated.

Be sure to check out our hands-on impressions of Project Shield at IGN Tech.

IPL6 International Regional #2

The second International Regional qualifier will stream its final four players and their matches on IPL. From the stacked 172 participant bracket, we’re down to the best of the best (or lucky) last four remaining combatants. Once again, this qualifier has the same qualifications as the previous ones: first and second get a seed into IPL6 with first-place receiving the free ride and hotel.

Semi-final #1

IM.Seed v. AZUBU.San

The first semi-final will be a mirror Protoss match between two of South Korea’s top players. From Incredible Miracle, Seed, will be the player to watch. He’s intelligent and employs unorthodox and creative strategies to win matches, especially in a PvP. San has shown some impressive team and qualifier success, but still suffers from lackadaisical play at times. He will need to tighten up to beat Seed. He did, however, brave a strong field to get to the semi-finals with wins over Son, Ryze, and MarineKing.

Semi-final #2

ST.Hack v. MVP.DRG

DongRaeGu has too many names with his achievements: successful, carrier, or one of the best. He’s achieved a lot for team MVP and his prize money is an indicator of that. Team StarTale’s Hack has started to receive some shine from the World Championship League and the ESV, but his resume lacks a bit compared to his opponent. This Zerg v. Terran matchup will be one of the highlights for the entire qualifier. It could be a bloodbath or an even chess match.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Karai is Here and She's Ready to Fight!

A big part of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles lore will be introduced on the Nickelodeon series this weekend, as Karai makes her debut.

In the episode, “New Girl In Town,” Leonardo, tired of Raphael’s constant criticism, lets his brother try his hand at leadership for a while. Meanwhile, Leonardo meets a beautiful and dangerous Kunoichi who tries to lure Leonardo to the dark side.

Karai has appeared in many incarnations of TMNT, almost always as a member of the Foot Clan with strong ties to Shredder; sometimes actually related to him. We'll see how that plays out here, as this version of Karai is a 16-year old who who has trouble following orders – even Shredder’s. She's described as "an expert martial artist who never met a weapon she didn’t like," and someone the Turtles discover "might be the one thing more dangerous than the Kraang and Shredder combined."

Kelly Hu (X2: X-Men United, Arrow) voices Karai on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and we have an exclusive clip of her in action below. Check out what happens when Karai and Leonardo (voiced by Jason Biggs) go blade to blade.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: "New Girl in Town" airs Saturday, February 2nd on Nickelodeon.

First Look at The Unwritten and Fables Crossover

Back at New York Comic-Con, Vertigo revealed that two of its longest-running series would come face-to-face in 2013: The Unwritten and Fables are colliding in The Unwritten #50. At first thought, it might be strange to see two separate Vertigo titles crossing over, but considering the literary nature of both books -- The Unwritten dealing with fictional characters leaving their stories and Fables being about fairy tale characters living in the real world -- it actually makes perfect sense.

Vertigo unveiled this cool teaser image today, featuring Unwritten's Tom Taylor and Fables' Bigby Wolf in a call back to the cover of The Unwritten #1.

The teaser image is a collaborative joint by Peter Gross and Mark Buckingham with Chris Chuckry on colors. The story hits in May.

BlackBerry Names Alicia Keys as Creative Director

At today’s BlackBerry 10 launch in New York, CEO Thorsten Heins announced that Alicia Keys would be joining the company’s ranks as their new Global Creative Director. The recently rebranded BlackBerry – fare thee well, RIM – has been desperate to shore up interest in its products and services to slow the downward spiral of its own stock, and it’s hoping that a famous face might inspire an uptick in sales. Celebrity executives are evidently all the rage, with Intel and Polaroid teaming up with will.i.am and Lady Gaga respectively and now Keys is the latest addition to the exclusive club of pop stars with impressive corporate titles.

In an occasionally awkward exchange, Keys and Heins discussed how BlackBerry lured the Grammy Award winning singer back into the fold after Keys, a longtime BlackBerry user, abandoned the company in favor of trendier options. Keys said that she had noticed "newer, hotter, sexier phones at the gym . . . but I always missed how you organized my life . . . so I started to have two phones, I was kind of playing the field . . now we're exclusively dating again!"

Keys’ Set the World on Fire Tour - sponsored by BlackBerry – is set to kick off in March and one of her first acts as Creative Director will be to produce videos to promote the brand with the help of her new BlackBerry Z10. Additionally, Keys will be spearheading the Keep Moving project, which aims to encourage productivity, social engagement, and creative enterprises through BlackBerry’s platforms. Writer Neil Gaiman and filmmaker Robert Rodriguez have also signed on board to produce content as a part of the project, though the nature of their endeavors remains to be seen.

Keys said she would be working closely with developers – a pronouncement that met with a few skeptical titters in the audience – and her own contacts in the music industry to promote the BlackBerry 10 platform. With a peck on the cheek that left Heins blushing, Keys exited the stage, jokingly telling Heins “I’ll see you at the office.” The laughter that met Heins’ response –“Yeah, Monday morning, 8 o’clock” – was a nod to the largely symbolic function of Keys' news position. Though Heins was clearly smitten, the 10% drop in BlackBerry’s stock this morning might mean that investors are somewhat less charmed.

BlackBerry Reveals Z10 and Q10 Smartphones, BlackBerry 10 OS

Today's BlackBerry Experience press event started with a piece of interesting news: the Research in Motion name is no more. From this day forward, the company behind BlackBerry smartphones shall be known simply as BlackBerry. But the real focus of the show was on the company's newest OS, BlackBerry 10, running on the company's new smartphones, the BlackBerry Z10 and BlackBerry Q10.

"Today represents a new day in the history of BlackBerry," said BlackBerry CEO, Thorsten Heins. "Two years ago we had to make a very serious decision: adopt someone else's platform or build a whole new one. We made the decision to go it alone."

The result of BlackBerry's efforts is BlackBerry 10, featuring a decidedly sleeker user-interface and advanced multi-tasking features. Nearly everything within the new system is based around the Hub, including the ability to switch between applications with the swipe of a thumb. Social media, including Facebook and LinkedIn, are integrated directly into the Hub, leading to some admittedly impressive efficiency. Other new features include a "flick-to-screen" typing system, screen-sharing with other BlackBerry Z10 users, and the integration of expected apps like Skype to BlackBerry World.

The BlackBerry Z10 is a touch-based smartphone with a 4.2-inch display at 1280 x 768, 356ppi. The Z10 is available in black or white models, but the white color is exclusive to Verizon. Street dates are staggered globally, with the UK receiving the Z10 tomorrow, Canada on February 5th, and the U.S. "in March." Heins said price points on the Z10 "will vary," depending on carrier. Verizon has stated it will launch the smartphone for $199.99 with two-year activation.

Meanwhile, the BlackBerry Q10 -- amazingly referred to as the "first BlackBerry 10 smartphone with a physical keyboard" -- received considerably less time in the spotlight during today's event. Very few details were announced, but the display is 720 x 720, with a keyboard resembling that of the BlackBerry Bold. The Q10's backplate features a "glass-weave" make-up, touted as being "thinner and lighter" than plastic.

"We built this for all those people who have to have a physical keyboard typing experience," said Heins.

The BlackBerry Q10 is expected to roll out in April, with BlackBerry apparently still in talks with carriers.

Entourage Movie Gets the Green-Light

Seems like it’s full-steam ahead on the Entourage movie, with Warner Bros. finally giving the film the green-light.

The hugely popular series – which revolved around movie star Vincent Chase and his Hollywood exploits with brother Johnny Drama and friends Turtle and E – ran on HBO from 2004 to 2011.

Ever since then a movie has been rumoured, with everyone involved intimating they’d be keen to return.

And according to Deadline, rumour became reality last night when the studio finally said yes to Doug Ellin’s screenplay. Ellin – who executive produced the show with Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson – will also direct, although there’s no word yet on a plot.

Warner now just needs to make deals with stars Adrian Grenier, Kevin Dillon, Kevin Connolly, Jerry Ferrara and Jeremy Piven, though at this stage that should just be a formality.

Harry Potter Star Cast in Doctor Who Drama

One of the stars of the Harry Potter films is set to play the first ever Doctor in forthcoming BBC Two Doctor Who drama An Adventure in Space and Time.

David Bradley – who played Argus Filch in the Potter flicks – has been cast as William Hartnell, the first actor to play the iconic Time Lord.

William Hartnell (on the left) will be played by David Bradley (on the right).

The one-off 90-minute drama will be written and executive produced by Mark Gatiss, and tell the story of the genesis of the long-running sci-fi series, which first aired on the BBC on November 23, 1963.

BBC Head of Drama Sydney Newman – credited with creating the show – will be played by Bourne Identity star Brian Cox, while producer Verity Lambert will be portrayed by Call the Midwife actress Jessica Raine.

Speaking to the BBC, Bradley - who also played the villain in recent Who episode 'Dinosaurs On A Spaceship' - said “I’m absolutely thrilled. I first heard about this role from Mark while watching the Diamond Jubilee flotilla from the roof of the National Theatre. When he asked if I would be interested, I almost bit his hand off!

“Mark has written such a wonderful script not only about the birth of a cultural phenomenon, but a moment in television history. William Hartnell was one of the finest character actors of our time and as a fan I want to make sure that I do him justice.”

Gatiss added, “what a cast! I’m utterly delighted that everyone’s favourite Time Lors will be in such brilliant and stellar company. We have a terrific team who can’t wait to tell the fascinating and surprising story of how the Doctor began his journey through space and time.”

CLICK HERE FOR IGN'S A-Z OF DOCTOR WHO

The ‘Adventure’ will start shooting this February and be broadcast later in the year as part of The Doctor’s 50th anniversary celebrations on the BBC.

And with speculation rife that all the living Doctors will pop up in the forthcoming series of Who, Bradley could also potentially be in line to reprise the role on show. Obviously that's just conjecture at this point, but stranger things have happened.

Chris Tilly is the Entertainment Editor for IGN in the UK and can't wait to see this drama. He rambles on both Twitter and MyIGN.

Aliens vs. Predator Developer Teases New Project

Rebellion Developments, the studio responsible for Aliens vs. Predator and Sniper Elite V2, has released a teaser trailer for a new title releasing next month.

The trailer, which you can check out below, is accompanied by the caption: "One man is utterly alone amidst the chaos of war. But there are worse things to fear than bombs and bullets here..."

The only concrete info we have about the game is that it'll be released on February 14 for PC users, but if we dig a little bit deeper we can get some clues about what to expect.

It seems a fairly safe bet that we're dealing with another zombie-focused title for PC, which is good, because there's been a real shortage of them lately. From the lumbering shapes seen briefly in the video to the familiar moans, everything seems to point this way, especially when taken with the text from the accompanying press release:

"Footsteps quicken in the fog. Although the lone gunman’s pace is swift the growing echoes of shuffling never slacken. They come."

The QR code at the end of the video doesn't really reveal much, taking you to a site inviting you to sign up for more news as it's released. So, for now at least, our money's on some form of zombie/Sniper Elite crossover game or zombie-themed DLC for Sniper Elite V2, though we're going to have to wait a couple of weeks to find out for sure. What do you guys think?

World of Tanks Developer Buys Console-Focused Studio

Wargaming.net has purchased the console-focused Day 1 Studios, leading to speculation it could bring some of its titles to platforms other than the PC.

The company, best known for its runaway hit World of Tanks, bought the F.E.A.R. 3 developer for $20 million to work "exclusively on the development of an unannounced console title".

"The move into console game development is a huge step for Wargaming, as we begin to expand our presence into new platforms," Wargaming CEO Victor Kislyi said. "We are looking forward to sharing the fruits of our labour soon."

Given that the title recently reported over 45 million players had registered and one server in Russia had 500,000 concurrent players last October, we're sure there are some people out there excited by the news, but are you one of them? Let us know in the comments below.

Evil Dead Remake Will Debut a Week Early

Groovy! Former Evil Dead star and producer Bruce Campbell has just tweeted that the Evil Dead remake will release a week earlier than planned in the United States.

"The world cannot wait. The Evil Dead remake launches one week earlier! 4/5/13. You demanded it - you got it!"

The tweet was accompanied by a blood-soaked character wielding a chainsaw - the favourite weapon of Ash, Evil Dead's original protagonist, played by Campbell.

The Evil Dead remake was originally planned for release on 4/12/13. There's no word yet on whether this will affect international release dates.

Ubisoft Montreal's 'Osiris' Uncovered in Leaked Video

NeoGAF users have discovered video evidence of an unannounced Ubisoft title called Osiris.

The work-in-progress trailer features unfinished motion capture spliced with various pieces of concept art. The trailer notes this mysterious game is “from the studio that brought you Assassin’s Creed”.

The “rough-cut demo” for “Ubisoft’s Osiris” was posted to the Vimeo account of composer Mark Kilian (Rendition, Traitor) five months ago, along with samples from films he’s also worked on, as part of what appears to be a portfolio. It is described as “commissioned by Ubisoft Studios (Montreal)”. It has gone unnoticed until now.

The video likely explains speculation stemming from leaked images last year that Ubisoft was working on a new Prince of Persia title. In particular, one of the three trailer screencaps we saw last year appears to match the mock-up trailer posted on Kilian’s Vimeo account.

Earlier today Ubisoft confirmed to us that the publisher had “paused” the Prince of Persia franchise while it considers new ideas. Is Osiris something entirely new? It seems increasingly possible.

Osiris was an ancient Egyptian god, usually identified as the god of the afterlife, the underworld and the dead.

A New PlayStation Ad: What’s It Teasing?

The PlayStation YouTube account has silently posted a new video, seen below, that seems to tease something God of War-related. Check it out.

The short, 16 second ad shows a woman in a white dress, walking on a hill. What seems like ash quickly flows in, with the camera quickly cutting to a close-up of an eye. The date “February 1, 2013” shows up, and the ad ends. The video itself is titled Game Day 2013 Teaser.

This almost certainly seems like a God of War ad, likely having to do with God of War: Ascension, which is due out in March on PlayStation 3. However, it’s also possible that the ad is teasing something else, including a different God of War game, or perhaps -- one can speculatively hope -- something next-generation related. However, the safe bet certainly rests with Ascension.

What do you think Sony’s teasing?

Cory and Topanga's Daughter Cast for Girl Meets World

World, meet Girl. 11-year-old Rowan Blanchard has officially been cast to play Cory and Topanga's daughter on the Disney Channel's Boy Meets World spinoff, Girl Meets World.

"As soon as Rowan walked into the room, I was reminded of why Ben Savage was loved as Cory Matthews," said producer and Boy Meets World creator Michael Jacobs. "Rowan is real and accessible and I am hopeful this girl is about to meet a world that will love growing up with her as well."

The young actress, whose credits include Spy Kids: All the Time in World in 4D and The Back-up Plan, was informed earlier tonight that she had landed the starring role as Riley Matthews in the upcoming family sitcom.

The pilot for Girl Meets World is scheduled to begin next month, according to EW.com. If (probably when) it gets a greenlight to series, the show will likely appear in the network's 2013-14 schedule.

No Justice League Movie Until Man of Steel Proves Itself?

The fate of Warner Bros.' planned live-action Justice League of America movie might be riding on how Man of Steel does at the box office.

Variety claims (via Bleeding Cool) that "Warner’s top brass has indicated that they are awaiting the results of Man of Steel, which opens June 14, before moving further ahead."

This makes sense considering the so-so commercial performance of the character's last big screen outing, Superman Returns. Also, with Man of Steel being tonally more in line with the Nolan Batman films and JLA expected to be more "comic book-y," it would seem like the studio would want to gauge audience reaction to this new take on Superman before making this incarnation the centerpiece of JLA.

The JLA movie is reportedly slated for a 2015 release. We'll see if that remains the case after Man of Steel opens.

Iron Man 3: Downey Chat, Super Bowl Spot and New Merchandise

Shellhead's reportedly coming to the Super Bowl.

Variety reporter Marc Graser tweets that Disney has bought air time during this Sunday's Super Bowl XLVII to run spots for not only Iron Man 3, but also The Lone Ranger and Oz the Great and Powerful.

Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr., is out promoting Iron Man 3 this week. In the first part of an extended interview with Entertainment Weekly, Downey raved about an action set-piece for the film they've dubbed the Boot/Glove Sequence. "It’s where Tony only has one gauntlet and one boot and he has to escape multiple captors. It’s really fun, dude," said Downey. "We’re taking everything from his first gauntlet test in the first movie up through the most extreme stuff we thought up for Iron Man 2 and The Avengers and pulling on all of it and making this one big, extended challenge of physics."

Downey also spoke about Tony's relationship with James "Rhodey" Rhodes, aka War Machine, in the Shane Black-directed sequel: "Rhodey is much more in the dead center of things. He’s much more dynamic. We’ve made this decision that while Tony is a technical guy, he’s not really a trained guy. There’s a lot of fun to be had with Don [Cheadle] because he’s really good with hardware and he’s a martial artist, so it’s been really fun exploiting this possibility of Tony having moments like the one in Avengers, like the one with Cap where he decides, “Oh screw it, he probably knows what he’s doing.” So there’s a lot of that and a lot more fun and a lot more depth to Rhodey this time around."

Finally, ComicBookMovie.com points out that a bunch of new Iron Man 3 merchandise has appeared at Disney.com, including bags, clothing and towels.

Four Reasons Why Pixel People Could Be Your Next iOS Addiction

I fired up Pixel Planet last week intending just to just check it out for a few minutes. I’ve been obsessively checking in on my growing pixel town ever since. Gamers will be able to check the title out for themselves when it launches this Thursday. To help you Get Hype, here are four reasons this is more than just your typical freemium town builder:

1) It combines town building with Doodle God-style Puzzling.

With humanity wiped out it’s up to you to rebuild society one cloned profession at a time. Players start with just two unlocked professions: Mayor and Mechanic. At the Arrival Center players can splice together two professions in the hope of unlocking a new one. Mayor +  Mechanic unlocks Engineer. Engineer + Mayor unlocks Architect, and so-on.

Some of the combinations make more sense than others (Plumber +  Construction Worker unlocks Janitor, I guess?) – but it’s a great feeling when you have a flash of insight and just know that a job combination will work. Vet + Coroner = Taxidermist? Of course it does.

Newly unlocked professions open up more town buildings, making the entire process of profession mixing and town building an addictive journey of discovery and rebuilding.

2) It continues to evolve and surprise you.

Early on I thought Pixel People was a polished and cute town builder that didn’t have much to it. But the longer I played I learned that many of the unlockable businesses serve dual purposes. As your town grows, more gameplay and decoration options are steadily introduced as well.

The Police Station unlocks access to an achievements menu, giving gamers new goals to track down. The Astro Church and Law Firm give gamers alternative ways to expand their city. The Fortune Teller provides one free profession combination per day. Tech Support, not unlocked until more than halfway through the game, opens up the ability to upgrade businesses.

Growing your town in Pixel People feels like peeling back layers of an onion.

3) It’s got a great style.

Many gamers have compared Pixel People’s squat, minimalistic inhabitants with Nimblebit’s pixel art style, popularized by Tiny Tower and Pocket Planes. It’s a fair comparison. It’s a good look, regardless of originality. As a child of the 80s, the more games that bring back high quality pixel art the happier I am.

Besides, Pixel People’s style extends beyond its pixelated aesthetics. The game is well-written, with each new profession accompanied by a witty one-liner. Each building is also accompanied by a clever description. Pixel People is always good for a smile. The art, catchy music and great writing combine to create a friendly and inviting atmosphere, right from the start.

2) It continues to evolve and surprise you.

Pixel People is free to download and play. Players can purchase Utopium with real-world dough and spend it on fancier decorations, skipping construction wait times and other conveniences. In freemium titles like this, the devil is often in the details. Is it a shameless cash-grab? Or is it truly easy to play without ponying up dough on a regular basis?

I’m happy to report that after many hours of play, with more than 100 of the 150 jobs unlocked, I’ve yet to feel the need to pay to speed up my Pixel People progress. Players are given numerous in-game opportunities to get Utopium for free. Planted trees will occasionally award Utopium. The occasional heart reward can contain up to 5 Utopium. Your starter Utopium Mine also awards a free daily bonus.

I’ve purchased nearly 10 premium decorations and 10 more premium houses, all without spending a cent.

IGN will have a full review of Pixel People when it launcher this Thursday, January 31. In the meantime, I've got more gene splicing to do. Hmm... I wonder what happens if you cross a Mechanical Engineer with a Pilot...

Epic Mickey Studio Junction Point Reportedly Closed

Epic Mickey developer Junction Point has reportedly closed. The news comes via the Twitter account of Robert Space Industries (the crowdfunding platform behind Chris Roberts’ upcoming Star Citizen), which wrote “Fare-the-well Junction Point! We hope that you all find new studios soon!”

Reports circulating earlier this month suggested that sales of Epic Mickey 2 were significantly lower than the original, prompting speculation about the future of the studio. 3D Realms co-founder George Broussard tweeted “the Junction Point rumors have been circulating a while. Warning signs when you give employees 2 months off after shipping.”

We’ve reached out to Disney for official confirmation and will update this story with any additional info we receive. IGN wishes the best of luck to anyone affected by the news.

Bryan Singer Talks X-Men: Days of Future Past

Recently, Bryan Singer shared a few more nuggets of info on the ever abuzz X-Men: Days of Future Past. To start, the director assured his fans that no stone was left unturned when it came to the highly anticipated time-travel crossover element.

"We've cracked it in a way that it makes sense," Singer explained to Empire. "I had a two-hour conversation with James Cameron about time travel, string theory, multiverses and all that. You have to create your rules and stick wtih them. That's why Terminator and Back To The Future work so well. And there are certain mechanisms in X-Men, certain powers, perceptions and characters, that make this possible."

Additionally, Singer noted that Days will take a good amount from the original comic book arc, story-wise. "It has a lot of aspects of the comic. The actual comic of Days Of Future Past had a whole ton of stuff going on, so it's like any of these things; you have to distill it. But I think the fans will be pleased that some of the most exciting parts of Days Of Future Past are going to be connected to this movie."

Although Singer is known for his work on X-Men and X2, some have wondered how closely he'll stick with the tangled web of X-movie chronology that's been established by other directors. "I'm taking into account every movie," he said. "I'm not just grabbing my first two movies and First Class and smashing them together. I'm taking into account the entire universe as it’s been laid out so far on the screen, and really respecting it and trying to work with that. People took things in various directions, so there’s some clean-up. But ultimately I’m not just ignoring them either."

Singer also revealed that the movie will feature yet another PG-13 F-bomb, following up on Hugh Jackman's memorable cameo line from First Class. "We're going to have another one in this one. We have another one coming up!"

X-Men: Days of Future Past opens July 18, 2014.

Disney's 1952 Retitled Tomorrowland

Walt Disney Studios announced today that their sci-fi adventure film known as 1952 will now be officially titled Tomorrowland.

Little is yet known about the film other than it has George Clooney set to star and that it was written by Damon Lindelof and Brad Bird from a concept by Lindelof and Jeff Jensen. Additionally, Lindelof will produce, and Bird will direct and produce.

Now word yet on whether Tomorrowland is directly associated at all with the Disneyland attraction of the same name, although Disney was developing a Tomorrowland movie five years ago that Dwayne Johnson was attached to star in and that Jon Lucas and Scott Moore had scripted.

It's also unclear whether Bird's film will draw from the similarly named classic Disney TV series (now available on DVD as Walt Disney Treasures: Tomorrowland: Disney in Space and Beyond).

Long before the Moon Race of the 1960s, Walt Disney was demonstrating how it would one day be possible to travel to outer space, how a space station might be built, how we might one day journey to the Moon and to Mars, how satellites could be launched that would help man one day control the weather, and how atomic energy could be harnessed for purposes beyond military weapons.

Tomorrowland is scheduled to hit theaters on December 19, 2014.

Mac Gaming's Biggest Challenges

If you want to look at the history of the aging debate between the PC and Mac as gaming platforms, a good place to start is 1994. id Software had just released the immensely popular Doom for PC, but Macintosh users would have to wait nearly two years before the title arrived on their platform. Meanwhile, in 1995, a then little-known developer called Bungie released Marathon, a groundbreaking first-person shooter developed solely for the Mac OS. Marathon set new standards for the genre, incorporating a rich narrative and free-look with the mouse.

Almost 20 years later, the story of Doom and Marathon remains relevant. While the Apple brand continues to grow in popularity, thanks to the iPhone and iPad, Mac gamers are still frequently forced to wait upwards of two years for major games to arrive on their machines. And despite increasing similarities in regards to hardware, one has to wonder if the Mac will ever stand shoulder to shoulder with its Windows-based counterpart. What's holding these otherwise lauded machines behind?

Where are the Games?

While the sheer number of triple-A videogame titles available for Mac OS X is historically dwarfed by the library afforded to PC gamers, the issue is quickly becoming less relevant. Most gamers are no longer purchasing physical copies of software, breaking down the overall cost for a publisher to release a game on both PC and Mac. Almost three years ago, Valve introduced Mac compatibility within its popular Steam client, a move which served as a tipping point for a number of developers to consider the Mac as a viable option.

But despite the expanding library of major game releases, launch dates for Mac titles are consistently well-behind Windows. Let's take the Call of Duty series, easily among the most popular game franchises today. Call of Duty: Black Ops wasn't released for Mac OS X until late 2012; nearly two years after Windows. While the gap is getting smaller, including some major releases hitting both platforms on the same day, the launch-day woes of Mac users still linger from 1994.

Apple could counteract this issue with incentives for game developers and publishers to get games launched on the same day as PC. No one wants to play a new game months late, let alone years. The birth of the Mac App Store offers advantages Apple is rarely exploiting, including pushing competitive pricing and even getting some titles on its own storefront before PC.

The Perceived Silence of Apple

Apple appears to do very little in the way of presenting its machines as competent gaming rigs. There is a perception within the gaming community – no matter how accurate – that Macs are vastly inferior in regards to playing games. While there's certainly an argument to be made touting the performance of Apple's hardware, Cupertino has done little to sway opinion. Mac desktops and laptops are rarely marketed as gaming powerhouses, as Apple continues to focus on productivity applications, pushing the game debate to its line of iOS devices.

Does Apple support developers in bringing games to Mac? According to Aspyr, a company porting a number of major titles over to the Mac platform, backing from Apple is at an “all-time high.”

“As a company who's only goal is to service the Mac customer, we've always wished for two things from Apple: to sell more hardware and to increase hardware capabilities,” said Elizabeth Howard, Aspyr vice president of publishing. “In recent years we're getting both. In addition to this, Apple has introduced the Mac App Store which has given more exposure to triple-A games, and Apple has been supportive of our releases from a marketing and awareness perspective.”

While it's encouraging for a developer like Aspyr to state Apple is showing support to their endeavors, there's still the matter of marketing. Apple is no slouch in the realm of advertisements, but the company still doesn't portray the Mac as a gaming device with the same vigor as its iOS platform. The perception of the Mac as lesser-than the PC in regards to gaming won't change without an outward strategy by Cupertino.

A Lack of Upgrades and Costly Hardware

Clearly, from a software and development perspective, the Mac platform has made significant advances in recent years. But like any piece of consumer hardware, price and longevity play a major factor. A new, high-end iMac is more than capable of running (compatible) performance-heavy games with high settings. A Mac Pro offers an increased life-span, thanks to upgradeable components, including the ever-important option to throw in a beefier graphics card.

But there's a problem: the performance of the iMac is always fleeting, since it's impossible to upgrade its internals beyond memory. And in the case of both of Apple's desktops, the price is exorbitantly high when compared to similar PC gaming rigs. As it stands, there's little reason to pay upwards of $2500 for a Mac to play games, when a PC setup could run even more titles at almost half the price.

If Apple wants to compete with PC in terms of gaming, the company has to change its approach to desktop configurations. The Mac Pro, Apple's most upgradeable machine, hasn't received a thorough makeover since 2008. A redesign could bring in some more affordable, gaming-centric options. Someone buying a Mac Pro for gaming simply wants a fast CPU and competent GPU, and Apple could make both of those happen with a streamlined rig for a comparable price.

A Lack of Upgrades and Costly Hardware

Granted, it's not all gloom and doom for Mac gamers. We're still living in one of the best times for the platform, and with each passing year, the differences to PC grow slimmer. There are still advantages to owning a Mac, including a lower probability of catching a virus, and developers are starting to take advantage of the prevalence of iOS devices to offer cross-platform play.

Ultimately, games still remain a bit of an after-thought for the high-end Mac platform; an icing-on-the-cake option for those utilizing high-performance productivity and creative suites. But as broadband speeds continue to rise and the promise of cloud-based gaming becomes ever-more a reality, the platform may one day not matter. One day, the ghost of Doom and Marathon may seem like strange history.

Star Wars 3D Releases Reportedly Cancelled

I don't think anyone is going to sweat this decision much, but Lucasfilm and Disney have reportedly decided to forego post-converting the original and prequel Star Wars films for 3D in order to "focus on the new trilogy" that will begin with J.J. Abrams' Episode VII.

The report comes from Deadline, who point out that the process had already been well underway. The Phantom Menace was released last February in 3D, and Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith were both scheduled for next fall.

Phantom Menace's 3D conversion was met with a generally lukewarm reception, but our own Eric Goldman screened some footage from Clones and Sith 3D at Star Wars Celebration this summer, which prompted him to say that it seems the two films have "undergone a very impressive 3D conversion that is far superior to the one The Phantom Menace had."

The original plan, revealed in 2010, was to release all six of the live-action Star Wars movies in 3D at the rate of one per year -- back when there were only six live-action Star Wars movies, that is. That appears to be off the table for now, because, you know, we're getting more live-action Star Wars movies!

Update: StarWars.com has offered up an official statement on Deadline's story, saying that "Lucasfilm has decided to postpone this fall's scheduled release of Star Wars Episodes II and III in 3D. Given the recent development that we are moving forward with a new Star Wars trilogy, we will now focus 100 percent of our efforts on Star Wars: Episode VII in order to ensure the best possible experience for our fans. We will post further information about our 3D release plans at a later date."
